แต่ในช่วง 45 นาทีแรกนั้นเป็นเกมที่ค่อนข้างน่าเบื่อเนื่องจากทั้งสองทีมไม่มีโอกาสลุ้นทำประตูกันแบบจะแจ้งเลย โอกาส 2 ครั้งจริงๆที่น่าจะได้ลุ้นก็คือลูกที่โวโรนิน ได้ปรี่เข้าไปยิงตามน้ำในเขตโทษตั้งแต่นาทีที่ 10 แต่ก็ตรงตัวเชร์นี่

Fernando Torres scored his 32nd goal of the season as Liverpool secured a thoroughly deserved 1-0 win against Manchester City at Anfield.

In what was ultimately a match without consequence for either side, City were hopelessly bereft of attacking ambition and created little of note all afternoon. Sven-Goran Erikkson's team did little to further the cause of their manager.

Liverpool dominated the first half and came close to a lead on 20 minutes, when Ryan Babel's header from Dirk Kuyt's right-wing cross fizzed over the bar.
Kuyt and Torres were in fine form, buzzing with intent and running tirelessly to open space for their team-mates at every opportunity.

The home side's best chance of the opening period came just after the half-hour mark. Steven Gerrard cut in from the left and sent a wicked curling shot towards the far corner, only for Joe Hart to throw himself horizontal and produce a stunning fingertips save.

Somehow City went into the break level, but Liverpool's inevitable goal was not long coming. On 56 minutes, Torres burned past Richard Dunne and sent a low shot through Hart and in.
The goal signalled a period of dominance which should have ended the match as a contest. Hart saved well from Kuyt's crashing volley, and then Ryan Babel missed from five yards after Torres once again left Dunne for dead on the right.

Liverpool were creating chances left, right and centre, but lacked a clinical edge. As a result, City remained in contention and could have stolen a point with a greater degree of invention.
Aside from Elano's 25-yard free-kick early in the second half, which hit the post, City failed to fashion a single decent opening and allowed Liverpool to cruise home.

Rafa Benitez's side were far from joyous upon the final whistle. Still smarting from their Champions League defeat against Chelsea they set about the business of thanking supporters at Anfield for their loyal support with a noticeable lack of enthusiasm.

Jamie Carragher feels he and his teammates can be proud of the fight they put up at Stamford Bridge despite the agony of missing out on Moscow.
The Reds did what they've never done before in scoring in SW6 under Rafa's management to take the game down to the wire.

But it wasn't to be as extra-time goals from Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba saw Chelsea book their place in the first ever all-English European Cup final.

Carra told Liverpoolfc.tv: "We came down to Stamford Bridge and performed well, and I think everyone can be proud of the performance we put in, but the result is all that matters at the end of the day and Chelsea are through.

"Of course there is disappointment in the dressing room, especially because we have come down here and done well. We showed great character but the most important thing in any football match is the result, and Chelsea got it."

Some felt Liverpool could have had at least one penalty at the Bridge, though Carra is typically reluctant to make excuses. He continued: "Maybe we should have had a penalty on Sami Hyypia but there is no point complaining after the game. It's gone, Chelsea are through and it's their time to enjoy it. We have to accept it and move on.

"The first half we didn't play particularly well but from the second half onwards and the extra-time we came out with a lot of credit. Chelsea won and the result is always the main thing but we've got to be proud of the way we reacted and the way we performed and hope that that bodes well for the future. "It would have been a great final but I'm sure Chelsea v Man United will be a great final too. But it's not so much playing United, it's about getting to the Champions League final which is a fantastic achievement. The first final between two English clubs would have been great to have been involved in so that's a big disappointment."

GERRARD: WE CAN OUTPLAY CHELSEA

Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool's class of 2008 have enough quality to outplay Chelsea in their own backyard.

Stamford Bridge has not been the happiest of hunting grounds for Gerrard and co over the last few years, but with summer additions such as Ryan Babel and Fernando Torres, the skipper believes the Reds now have nothing to fear at the Bridge. The 2005 Champions League winner said: "We really feel that we are as good as Chelsea, if not better than them. We have certainly been the better team when we've played them this season. "We were the better team when we played them in the League at Anfield and again in the Champions League, only for both games to end in draws." A last-minute away goal to level the tie at 1-1 means Chelsea hold a slight advantage going into the second leg of this season's Champions League semi-final. But Gerrard went on: "We were gutted at the end of the first game because we were on top for most of the time and Chelsea scored their equaliser without really producing anything. "It was a real killer us, but these things happen in football and it's now all about how we react and how we recover. "Now we have got to back up a good performance with the right result." Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez wants the officials in Wednesday's Champions League semi-final second leg at Chelsea to clamp down on what he sees as Didier Drogba's theatrics.


Benitez believes Blues striker Drogba goes down far too easily.
"With Drogba, it's important to have a good referee," the Spaniard said.
"You can't do anything, but I will say it because it was so clear. He is amazing because he is massive.
"It's very impressive. I have a lot of clips of him from over the years and he surprises me. After four years, I expected it."
Benitez revealed he had compiled clips of Drogba during Liverpool's numerous matches against Chelsea since he became manager.
The Spaniard was unhappy at what he perceives as preferential treatment for the striker at Anfield in Tuesday night's first leg.
"We've played against Chelsea 19 games and every time I have collected some clips of Drogba," Benitez explained.
"I have shown them to some of the players. I think that (Martin) Skrtel and Carra (Jamie Carragher) were really good against him the other day, the only problem was the referee was giving fouls. And it was not the same with (Fernando) Torres."Sporting Life /Eurosport
